5 Top Tips for a Healthy Home this Autumn

5 Top Tips for a Healthy Home this Autumn

We love autumnal changes - it’s such a lovely time of year to create a cosy and relaxing environment indoors. But as the days grow shorter and the air turns damp, autumn brings a gentle reminder that our homes need a little extra care as we prep for the cooler months ahead. With more time spent indoors and less fresh air flowing through open windows, it’s easy for dust, moisture, and mould to build up. If that happens, our health can be negatively impacted, but the good news? A few simple changes can make your home feel fresher and healthier. Here are five easy, practical ways to do just that:

1. Banish the Damp

When it’s cold outside, it’s tempting to keep every window tightly closed. But a little ventilation goes a long way in preventing damp and mould - both of which thrive in still, humid air. Try opening windows for ten minutes each morning to refresh the atmosphere and make sure extractor fans are running during showers and cooking.

If your home tends to feel damp in autumn, a dehumidifier can be a real ally. They are a low maintenance option and are also inexpensive to run. Place one near moisture-prone rooms like bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry areas to draw out excess humidity and stop condensation forming on walls and windows. It can even help clothes dry faster indoors, saving energy compared to a tumble dryer.

2. Stop Dirt at the Door

A simple way to make your home healthier is to adopt a shoe-free rule. Outdoor shoes carry dirt, pesticides, and bacteria, all of which can transfer onto floors and carpets - certainly not ideal for little ones crawling or playing. Keep things practical and inviting by setting up a small basket near the door with slippers ready for family and guests to help themselves to. If you find it awkward to ask people to remove their shoes, a ‘shoes off please’ sign hung on the back of the door can be a perfect way to get the message across! To keep hands clean too, consider keeping a bottle of James & Co’s Hand Sanitiser near the door to remind people to use it as they enter the house. It’s so convenient for quick clean-ups after school runs, dog walks, or garden trips, with no need to head straight for the sink.

3. Go Green - Literally

Indoor plants are a natural, inexpensive way to purify the air and balance humidity in the home. Many varieties even thrive in lower autumn light, so they are an ideal choice for this time of year. If you’re new to houseplants, start with easy, low-maintenance options like spider plants, snake plants, or peace lilies. For families, getting children involved is a lovely way to teach care and responsibility - let them pick a plant, name it, and take charge of caring for it. Pet owners should double-check which plants are safe: areca palms and Boston ferns are excellent non-toxic choices.

4. Switch to Natural Cleaning Products

As we close up our homes for the cooler months, the cleaning products we use can have a bigger impact on indoor air quality. Many conventional sprays and detergents release chemicals that linger long after the chores are done. Instead, try natural alternatives - distilled white vinegar mixed 50:50 with water for surfaces, basins, mirrors, tiles etc - just

remember to rinse well and buff to a shine. Lemon juice works a treat for shining chrome taps and ceramic sinks by removing limescale and dirt - leave to soak and rinse away. Consider plant-based sprays for general cleaning - these are now widely available in supermarkets. These eco-friendly alternatives are kinder to the environment and safer for small hands, paws, and sensitive skin.

Don’t forget your laundry; switching to plant-based, biodegradable detergent can make a huge difference. Choose natural formulas that are fragranced with essential oils rather than artificial perfume, and are free from harsh chemicals such as phthalates, phosphates, parabens, and optical brighteners. These products are often concentrated too, meaning a little can go a long way.

5. Keep Allergens at Bay

Keeping your home’s air clean isn’t a one-off job - it’s about small habits that add up. It’s a good idea to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter (especially important for pet-friendly homes), and remember to wash items such as curtains, throws and cushion covers at the start of each season. Many duvets and pillows are machine washable and doing this will reduce dust mite allergens - just make sure they are thoroughly dried out before you use them again. For those happy to make a larger investment, an air purifier is well worth considering. These clever devices capture dust, toxins, viruses, pet dander, and allergens, making them especially helpful for anyone prone to allergies and chemical sensitivities.

These simple tips can really make a big difference - both to the health of your family and the condition of your home. Prevention really is better than cure when it comes to keeping on top of mould, damp and allergens. With just a few thoughtful tweaks this autumn, you can create a space that’s as good for your wellbeing as it is beautiful to be in.
